York Technical College Receives $1 Million Lowe's Foundation Gable Grant to Expand Skilled Trades Training

York Technical College has been awarded a $1 million Gable Grant from the Lowe's Foundation. The grant will fuel a major expansion of hands-on training in the College's Building Construction Trades program, which covers HVAC, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and appliance repair.

The funding will transform the program's training facilities and equipment, giving students access to modern, job-site-quality labs that put them a step ahead before they ever set foot on their first job. It's an investment that will pay off for years to come, benefiting both the students who come through the program and the employers across the region who are counting on a strong pipeline of skilled talent.

"The best skilled trades education happens when students have the opportunity to learn by doing," said Dr. Meg Webber, Vice President of Academic Affairs at York Technical College. "We are incredibly grateful for this investment, which will enable us to expand hands-on training that sends graduates into the workforce with the confidence and technical expertise to thrive in their chosen profession."

An estimated 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled by 2030, according to the Department of Education, creating potential economic losses of up to $1 trillion annually. As demand for skilled trades professionals continues to outpace supply, expanding access to training and career pathways has become increasingly critical for communities and employers alike.

York Technical College is one of 10 community and technical colleges nationwide selected to receive a Gable Grant this round, part of nearly $8 million the Lowe's Foundation is putting toward skilled trades training.
