York Technical College understands that earning a college degree is a necessary step toward maximizing your personal potential and career success. Our faculty and advisors are available to help guide you into transforming your life and work experience into college credit with our Credit for Prior Learning process. 

York Technical College’s Credit for Prior Learning process is designed to help students earn college-level credit for their life and work experience by way of a portfolio, which could include internships, apprenticeships or overall life experiences. 

Specific past experiences and accomplishments can be submitted to York Technical College for an assessment by experts in the subject matter or field of study.  All training or prior learning submitted for review must be directly related to the course content and include evidence of college level learning that meets the requirements of the course for which credit is being requested.  

Students seeking to earn college-level credit by presenting documented evidence should submit a comprehensive portfolio as part of the Credit for Prior Learning Application. The portfolio enables students to demonstrate that they have acquired college-level knowledge and skills through prior learning and experiences that are equivalent to the learning outcomes of the requested course.  

Portfolio Based Exemption: 

To have life and work experiences evaluated for college-level credit, students may document their learning through a comprehensive portfolio that includes, but is not limited to:  

• Resume
• Job descriptions
• Letters from employers
• Performance evaluations
• Awards and recognitions
• Records of volunteer service
• Workforce training
• Publications
• Professional certifications
• Specialized training
• Other documentation that demonstrates the knowledge and skills acquired through prior learning and experience. 
  
  

The documentation submitted must meet established academic standards and provide sufficient evidence of college-level learning. Multiple forms of documentation may be required to demonstrate competency and support the awarding of Credit for Prior Learning. The reviewing department may request additional documentation or supporting evidence as deemed appropriate to evaluate the request.
