Alumni Stories - Jacob Anglin

Jacob Anglin (Machine Tool Technology)

With so many programs, degrees, and certificates available, enrolling at York Technical College without a clear path in mind may seem overwhelming. However, for Jacob Anglin, taking the leap into the unknown led him to discover his passion for machine tool technology.

After graduating from Lewisville High School in Chester, South Carolina, Jacob began his York Tech journey with an engineering program that he ultimately decided was not his passion. After some time and consideration, he discovered the machine tool technology program and never looked back:

I had no idea what machine tool technology was until I started. While on my journey to try to figure out what I wanted to do, I knew I wanted to find something I enjoy doing that also makes me good money and will keep me interested for as long as I am working. Then, I looked at what do I personally enjoy doing? I enjoy shooting sports, working with my hands, stuff like that...After some research, that’s when I discovered machine tool technology.”

Jacob had found his passion and was prepared for anything the Machine Tool Technology program threw at him. Because of this, when he was approached about competing in SkillsUSA, a national competition for career and technical programs, his response was a resounding yes. Due to his hard work and dedication, Jacob became York Technical College's first SkillsUSA gold medalist and national champion:

“I love challenging myself, so I knew I wanted to do it. I was in the shop probably every day from 9:00-3:00 making sure I was putting in that work and doing tests...Even if it was impossible to try, I needed to further my ability to perform. SkillsUSA is very established, so even at the state level there were several thousand people and then over forty thousand at the national competition.”

Through York Tech and Skills USA, Jacob created invaluable memories and enhanced his skill set, laying a strong foundation for his future career. Obtaining essential workplace skills can be challenging, but through the help and support of his instructors, Jacob was able to excel in ways he hadn’t before:

“York Tech taught me that not everything is as surface level as it may seem to be. I’ve learned to take a step back, reevaluate before making a decision. Before, I would have the tendency to make a quick decision and then go to regret it later. York Tech has definitely shaped me into at least part of the person who I am today with the community and environment here. It’s just very welcoming; all the people you’ll meet are very welcoming and helpful. Seeing that type of environment being fostered makes you want to do the same for others.”

In celebrating Jacob and other alumni achievements, we see their success stories and the great impact of education and perseverance. They not only exemplify excellence in technical skills but also inspire future generations to pursue their passion and drive our college into the future. As we reflect on their journeys, our commitment to helping our students thrive in their passion is reaffirmed.
