Cailee Ratliff (Construction Management)
“I used to be very much a shy person, always in my shell. I didn't talk to you unless I knew you. Now, I've become this little golden retriever, talking to everyone, and it's really because of York Tech and SkillsUSA. Instead of only staying in the construction management group with my classmates, I'm reaching out to people in the welding department, automotive people as an officer that I would have never met otherwise. If it wasn't for SkillsUSA at York Tech, I would have never been as outgoing as I am now. It's really shaped me not only personally, but professionally too.”
SkillsUSA is a competition based on workplace, technical, and personal skills that originated for people in trades. Cailee was central in developing a leadership chapter at York Tech; this was also the first leadership chapter in the state on a post-secondary level. Through this she was able to better develop her own workplace skills and contribute to the evergrowing York Tech legacy.
Cailee undoubtedly found her path at York Tech and has decided to come back to earn an associate in business to help her journey along. Understanding that some people may still be deciding their next step, Cailee offers this advice for those in consideration:
“Do it. You get one-on-one attention and the teachers truly care about you. When I first started college, I thought that they wouldn't care about me and they'd make things really difficult. I had the “what you see on movies,” perception about colleges - just old professors that didn't care about you or your growth. At York Tech, it's the opposite of that. They care about you, they want to see you succeed, and when they watch you walk across the graduation stage they are still there for you. They become your teachers, but also become some of your best friends and supporters.”
Cailee found her place at York Tech and thrived as a student through a trades based, hands-on education. Whether you are seeking a more traditional education in English and History or may thrive better in trades doing construction or automotive mechanics, York Tech provides you with the necessary tools to work towards your goals. Cailee’s story demonstrates that whatever you are searching for, you can find it at York Tech:
“I knew that by coming to Tech, I would get a hands-on education, which is what I wanted and better fit me as a student. I cannot stand sitting in the classroom all the time. I know when I go out in the field that I know how to work with my hands and how to run tools. Sitting in a classroom all day in a four year school is great for some people, and you might be book smart, but when you get out in the field, it's a whole different ball game. Being at Tech, you get the hands on side and the classroom side, it's a good mix of both.”
During her time in college, Cailee discovered her confidence, found her community, and developed effective leadership and workplace skills. Her success, along with that of many other students, is evidence that York Tech provides the resources and support needed to meet the goals of every student who joins our campus.
