Winthrop University and York Technical College Expand Partnership With Meta-Majors

York Technical College Staff Standing With Winthrop Staff

Winthrop University and York Technical College have expanded their partnership to help students who intend to transfer to Winthrop more easily select their respective major and move efficiently toward graduation.

Known as Meta-Majors, the initiative clusters groups of majors that fit within a career area and have the same course sequence for students’ first two years at York Technical College. Students can select a Meta-Major based on their career interest and strengths.

The four Meta-Majors are:

  1. Arts, Language and Communication
  2. Business and Management
  3. Society and Politics
  4. Science and Health

Each cluster includes guided pathways outlining the course requirements at York Technical College and Winthrop along with key milestones for students to track their progress towards their associate degree (York Tech) and bachelor’s degree (Winthrop). The guided pathways also include an on-ramp process to clarify their college and career goals and embed advisement, academic support and feedback on student progress throughout their educational path.

An example: a student wants to pursue a business degree with an accounting concentration. The guided pathways list every course the student will need to take in his or her two years at York Tech and two years at Winthrop in addition to other tasks he or she should build into the time, i.e., monitoring e-mail, tracking cultural events and registering for classes.

Winthrop Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Adrienne McCormick emphasized the new initiative was a joint effort from the very beginning.

“Winthrop and York Tech employees built a unified team that produced amazing results in a single semester,” she said. “This shows how ready both institutions are to strengthen the pathways between us. As a result, all of our students will attain degrees more quickly and get into the workforce ready to make an impact in their chosen fields. I can't wait to see where we take this partnership next!”

York Technical College President Stacey Moore said they could not be more thrilled with this partnership to “create sustainable, student-centered transfer pathways across our technical and university transfer areas.”

“These pathways allow for seamless transfer from York Tech to Winthrop, saving students time and money,” Moore explained. “It’s everything a student needs to gain multiple, high-quality college credentials that lead to rewarding careers. The dedication and commitment of a team of incredible professionals from both institutions to engage in an innovative, mutually beneficial partnership is truly groundbreaking. I hope it will pave the way for more partnerships like it across the state.”
