York Technical College was awarded over $3 million for the next five years from the U.S. Department of Education to provide support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The funding, which totals $600,846 annually, will fund two TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) programs at the College.

TRIO programs are designed to sustain opportunities for students who are first-generation, disabled or low-income, through academic development, assisting with basic college requirements, and to motivate students to complete their college matriculation. The overall goal of the program is to increase college retention and graduation rates among students who participate.

The College offers the regular TRIO SSS program, PROMISE (Providing Resources Opportunities and Motivation to Improve Student Endeavors) and the STEM/Health Science SSS program entitled STEM Scholars. The College has operated an SSS program since 1978. Student Support Services provides academic tutoring, information on financial aid, exposure to cultural and academic events, presents available career options, mentors students, and much more.

Student Support Services is one of eight federally funded programs known collectively as TRIO Programs. For more information on the PROMISE Program, visit https://www.yorktech.edu/promise-program/.
