Anthony Cherry (EMS)
When Anthony Cherry enrolled at York Technical College, he had a vision for their
future and the drive to match. Today, his journey from student to paramedic is a shining
example of how community colleges can be a stepping stone for success.
Anthony began his York Tech journey in the fall of 2019 after debating what his next
step was after high school. He was aware that four-year universities cannot always
accommodate everyone’s dreams, and he sought a buzzing social atmosphere where he
could find his passion as a student. After some consideration he landed on York Tech
to obtain his certification in emergency medical services (EMS):

“My main thing was honestly a social aspect, so it was nice to go to Tech and see
just different walks of life. You go to university, and everyone has the same focus
there. It’s so different from that, so it was cool meeting people from different walks
of life or similar to mine. I’ve made some good friends along the way that I'm still
in touch with. Along with that, in the EMS program, I found a passion in a field that
I never thought I would enter, and now I don't see myself leaving the medical field.”
Anthony enjoyed his experience at York Tech so much that he decided to return to earn
a second associate degree in general technology with a concentration in paramedicine.
He now excels in his field, working for Chester and Piedmont County EMS, serving as
a corporate officer for SkyTech at the Rock Hill airport, and teaching as an adjunct
instructor at York Tech. York Tech helped him nurture his passion, and here’s what
he had to say about what makes York Tech a great school:
“I would say the faculty and teachers. They say we're here for the students, which
is comforting and rewarding to see that, as students, we’re supported. There are people
that are just here for the class and grades they say, 'Okay, no problem, you're here
and that’s the first step.' Then there are people that say, 'Hey, I want to be here,
and I want to do these extra things' and they say, 'All right, cool, we can push that
and we can foster that kind of mentality.' This is different from what I've seen at
other places. It's heartwarming and I love it.”
From two time student to paramedic professional and instructor, Anthony has made his
mark on the York Tech legacy. Nearing our 60th anniversary, we are humbled by the stories of how York Tech has helped shape lives
and the impact on our community. Here’s what Anthony had to say about the York Tech
legacy:
“You go around to different places in the community and see different people say,
'I went to Tech!' and I'm like, 'oh, so did I!' It’s amazing how many different connections
there are with complete strangers, whether it's somebody that I'm flying or even a
patient saying, 'I just graduated from Tech!' Also, it's not only just impacted the
York County community, but Charlotte, Lancaster, Chester, Fairfield, and so many different
people from different walks of life can say, I've been impacted by Tech.”
We take immense pride in our students, their achievements, and helping them find their
passion at York Tech. Anthony’s story is woven into the legacy of York Tech, alongside
thousands of other students who enrich our community.
