York Technical College encourages remote proctoring for any assessments taken virtually, in all course types – online, hybrid, web-enhanced, or face-to-face, where the assessment would be proctored in an in-person setting. Students taking online or hybrid courses should expect to utilize remote proctoring on tests, quizzes, exams, or other assessments, as deemed appropriate by the instructor. On-ground and in-person courses may also utilize remote proctoring for some assessments to allow for more instructional time in person. Remote proctoring allows students the ability to take an assessment at a time convenient for their schedule
Remote Proctoring Fees per Term:
Remote proctoring is very common for online courses throughout the United States. Regulations and guidance provided by the Department of Education and our regional accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC), require that we ensure the integrity of our courses and verify the identity of students taking assessments remotely.
In an on-ground course, proctoring is provided by the instructor, other college employee, or the assessment center. In-person proctoring is not always available in online and distance education courses. Remote proctoring helps prevent academic dishonesty such as using unauthorized materials or resources, copying content and providing it to others, and false identity. York Technical College is committed to offering a remote proctoring option for any assessment taken in an online environment.
York Technical College protects student information as required by the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable regulations and laws. Our agreement with Honorlock ensures that student information is maintained in accordance with these regulations. Honorlock (and other companies) are prohibited from using student data in any manner other than the contracted services.
Honorlock works through a Google Chrome extension and does not require software installation on a computer. Extensions in Google Chrome only have access to limited information provided by the browser. The Honorlock extension is only active when you are taking an assessment that has been set up with Honorlock. When the extension is active, you will see a flashing red light on the extension icon in the toolbar of Chrome. If this indicator is not active, then you can trust there is no active monitoring.
If you are concerned, you may uninstall the extension after taking an assessment. Please note, if you elect to uninstall the extension you will need to reinstall it prior to taking another assessment using Honorlock.
No, this is not true. Our agreement with Honorlock does not allow them to sell or share student information to other parties.
No. Honorlock does not scan your network, your computer, your phone or any other devices on your network. Honorlock has no access to anyone’s network or devices and does not route traffic from your device through their servers in any way.
Honorlock uses patented technology to monitor and detect secondary device use during a proctored assessment. You can view the patent information here. Honorlock does not have access to your network or any network you may be using during a proctored assessment. However, it does monitor the quality of your internet connection (much like Zoom and other web-conferencing platforms) to verify and document internet instability during an assessment. This allows Honorlock to confirm and troubleshoot internet issues during a proctored assessment.
At York Technical College, instructors make the determination as to whether cheating took place during an exam session. If an instructor determines a student has cheated or committed in academic dishonesty during a proctored assessment, they will follow the established procedures in the Student Handbook.
